Lydia's Luncheon


Nothing beats an afternoon spent with good friends, celebrating a birthday!  Several of my friends and I gave a luncheon for a mutual friend and it was such a lovely day.

I was anxious to celebrate spring, as well, so I chose these colors and added a selection of birds and bird related dishes.  

This greeted the guests as they arrived at the front door.

I like to give a hint of the event on the gates or the door, or both.  This chalkboard with ribbons was a substitute for a wreath or basket of flowers.


These majolica-like salad plates led the charge!  They came from  Pottery Barn a year or so ago.  I paired them with turquoise dinner plates from Target.

The flatware was cream, and kept the look casual and the colors soft.

I've had these stems so long, I can't begin to remember where I got them.  They are unusual, in that the base is a periwinkle blue, the stems a soft turquoise, and the bowl a light blue.  Unfortunately, I broke two while I was cleaning up.


I thought the butter pats would look pretty with a fresh viola.

These clear glass napkin holders were a hit.  I actually bought more to give the birthday girl as a gift.  They came from Boxwoods in Atlanta.  The tag serves as a placecard and is just attached with a narrow ribbon.  The napkin is a soft linen banded in white.  I think I picked them up at Homegoods.

I love to print a menu for each place setting, and include a quote at the bottom.  This one says, "Here's to tall ships.  Here's to small ships.  Here's to all the ships on the sea.  But the best ships are friendships.....Here's to you and me."  It is an old Maritime blessing.  At the end of the event, I always ask the guests to sign their name on it and then I keep it as a souvenir of the day.
















I bought these twig and nest arrangements at the floral wholesaler.  Then I added the eggs and the velvet covered birds.

Here's a close-up.  Doesn't he just make you smile?


The centerpiece is an arrangement of fresh hydrangeas in a whitewashed birch pot.  Then I added thistles for some interest......


And texture.

This ceramic bowl held the rolls.

I think these bird salt and pepper shakers came from Boxwoods, as well.



I used this chicken wire cloche with a bird in it on the chest in the dining room.

And the buffet held the coffee/tea set-up.


I have this sweet teapot and sugar/creamer with birds on them.  Don't you love the way I left the plastic wrap on the lemons in the picture?  Keeping it real here, folks.


Another bird plate that one of my guests gave me for Christmas held the tea selection.  The silver bird and edging added some class to the offerings!

I even found a beaded bird in the same colors for the gift wrapping.

And every birthday girl must wear this fun crown.  Lydia looked beautiful in it, but I promise my friends that they needn't have their picture in my blog.  Some folks are too private for this, and I want to respect their feelings.  I don't even put my own photo on the blog!


















This was the beverage set up in the bar.  I had these white hydrangea plants but I'm afraid that they are at the end of their beauty.


One powder room had our first three daffodils and an extra hydrangea.

The other powder room had a bird vase, as well.


And some Caspari guest towels in an aqua toile.


It was a pretty day, but cool, so we sat by the fire and talked and talked.

Don't you wish you joined us for this dessert?  As pretty as it is, it tasted even better.  I'm sure hoping that Anne shares this recipe!!!

Fun and Friends On the Fourth



After a parade this morning, lunch at the club, and a swim to cool off, we are having some good friends over for a simple meal to celebrate the fourth.  This table doesn't scream "Fourth of July" the way some of my tables have.  It's more of a nod to the holiday.  This centerpiece was left over from a dinner at a concert on Friday night.  It has the laaaaaast of my hydrangeas in it with some red Gerbera daisies and some white shasta mums.

Here's the overhead of the table.  I started with this cream, red and blue stripped cloth with napkins to match.  I just love stripes, don't you?

I set this up out on the round white deck, after much debate.  It is HOT here, folks! 

Here's the location, just outside of the French doors in our living room.  You can just see the lake over the railing.

This is the placesetting.  

I started with this whitewashed wooden charger from World Market.  That, my friends, isn't a stain on it.....it's the photographer's shadow!  Duh!

The next layer is a cream dinner plate from ZGallerie.  Love the scalloped edges!

Here's an international minute for you!  The salad plate says "Villa San Giovanni Italy", is made in Portugal, and is celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the USA!  It is made by Metceramica.

These sailor's knot napkin rings go with the anchor on the plate.  I got them at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

Some people do not like colored glassware, but I think it adds a lot to a table.  The blue glasses are so old I can't remember where I got them, and the red are from Homegoods.  They are a little fancy for this table, but I love a mix.

These salt and pepper shakers are from Cracker Barrel. They actually have some interesting table pieces.  And darling little girl clothes.  (Not that I ever get to buy for a grandaughter.  Boo.)

We love this wine and it's a happy coincidence that the label goes so well with the table. 

I might take these flowers back inside until our guests get here, since it is so hot. 

Just hamburgers and pasta salad and watermelon.  True picnic food.  Our guests are bringing dessert.  I wonder what it will be.  Something cold, I hope.

The basket doesn't show up on the door, but it is just a grapevine basket.

And this is what will greet them down by the street.  I've had the bunting up for several days, and I'll leave it up for a while.  I'm proud to be an American, and I'm praying for some sort of healing for this country.  But that's another post, right?

Heavenly Hydrangeas!


It certainly is time to break out these dishes!  Why???

Because this is what my hydrangea bushes look like.  This one is on the lower terrace, but the ones in the cutting garden look just this glorious.  

So I set a table just in front of this beauty for dinner with Mr. Pressed Pants.

It was a lovely evening and I kept the dinner and the table very simple.

Even with that beautiful hydrangea bush I still wanted to add some of these incredible blooms to the table.

The dinner plates are by Nature's Home and the pattern is Hailey Sky.

This blue handled flatware is so old, I can't remember where it came from.  The woven chargers and napkin rings are from World Market, but you can find them many places.  

These large blue stems are also old. 

I used these Emile Henry butter dishes from William-Sonoma as salt and pepper dishes.  These are the only serving pieces I added.

As the night deepened, we saw the season's first fire flies. 

Here's the view from the upper terrace.  The deer have had a buffet in that flower bed, but thankfully, they have left the hydrangeas alone! 

Here's the secret to droop-proof blooms:  Alum.  Yep, the stuff you use for canning and can find in the spice aisle of almost every grocery store.  Go to the garden in the morning, and take a bucket of water.  Then just as you cut the stem, dunk it about an inch in water and then into the jar of alum.  The alum will clump around the stem.  Wait just a couple of seconds and then put it into the water bucket.  If you re-cut to arrange the stems, do this again. 

Here's what to look for.

You'll have firm, beautiful blooms that will last and last and last.  I hope your hydrangea bushes are as prolific as mine are this year.  The last two years were very disappointing.  Now, I hope that they keep on blooming all summer.  I just can't get enough of them.
