A Kate Spade Luncheon

Who doesn't love Kate Spade? Her graphics are so fresh and simple, and everything she does feels modern and fun, fun, fun.

I set a table with some of her linens and some black and white items that I already had.

This coral and white polka dotted tablecloth is a co-ordinate with this fun napkin that shouts "Salut" among the black and white handwriting. I've had these black banded dinner plates for years. They came from Target, I think. This black handled flatware is also from Target years ago.

This black and white pitcher is another Target purchase last summer. I had a handful of white roses left over from Valentine's Day and they worked just fine.

When I bought these black stems, I never could imagine how often I've used them.

Here, I've paired them with these Juliska glasses.

This is a terrible picture, but these simple salt and pepper shakers were yet another Target buy.

There were no frills or embellishments. No placecards, no serving pieces, and no napkin rings.

I just wanted to honor Kate Spade and her design sensibilities.

Simple! Fun! Kate Spade all the way!

Alfresco Dining - Two Tables with Coral

When Chloe Crabtree from Create and Decorate invited me to be a part of her Alfresco Dining blog hop, I was flattered, excited, and inspired. Now that it is time to post, I've decided to feature two tables I have done that both have turquoise in them, one soft and subtle, and one much more vibrant and busy. Take a look:

On this first table, I started with these napkins embroidered with turquoise coral, and kept the colors quite soft and costal.

The table was set down on our lower terrace, surrounded by greenery, flowers, and stonework.

The whitewashed charger from World Market reminded me of driftwood. I added a turquoise scalloped dinner plate from Target, and used antique mismatched flatware.

The napkin was softly folded and laid on the plate with a small fisherman's float used as a placecard. I found them at Pottery Barn last summer.

A real shell serves as a small bread and butter plate.

These stems are etched with costal images and the turquoise tumbler is a Martha Stewart item used as a stemless wine glass.

The centerpiece is simply a pottery dish filled with sand and shell, with some beautiful sea glass.

These sea urchin salt and pepper shakers fit the bill perfectly!

A few stripped pillows made the very ordinary chairs more interesting and more comfortable.

Here's the location. It's poolside, and we love to eat here and hear the sound of the waterfall and the frogs.

This coral patterned fabric and cushions are from Ballard Designs. They are such an improvement over the cushions we had previously.

Since this tablecloth (which is indoor-outdoor fabric) is so busy, the orange placemat helps to set the plate apart. The dinner plates are from a store in Atlanta that has gone out of business. They are made by Marval. I chose bamboo handled flatware to keep the tropical feel.

Yes! These ARE the same napkins in a different color. These napkin rings look like coral and came from Pottery Barn.

These stems are so fun. Do you see the coral in the stem?

I used these matching bowls for a cold corn and crab soup.

And I love the soup spoons I found at World Market.

The centerpiece started with a bunch of bright orange Gerbera daisies and a piece of white coral. I added an orange glass votive, and shells.

And these wonderful porcelain starfish.

There is a lot going on here, but because the colors are kept to basically two colors, it works.

One more place that I used a coral design was in these salad servers. Now I think I'm done buying coral items. Enough!

Little Red Truck Table

You may be thinking that the Peterson's didn't even celebrate Christmas this year, because I have yet to post about any holiday parties or meals. I even got an email from a reader who asked if I were ill! Well, you see, my sweet, 91 year old mother can no longer travel, and this is her first year in an assisted living facility. That meant that if we were to be together, I had to travel to her. Thanks to our older daughter hosting us at her home, we had a wonderful time and have found a new "normal". I'm finally back in Atlanta, and we hosted a very informal dinner for some old friends. I was happy to use these cheerful place mats from Target and they made such a fun table!

Isn't this cute? This "woodie" with the tree on top is sort of an iconic symbol of our modern Christmas. This was us years ago when our girls were small, but the vehicle was a blue Ford Pinto wagon!!!!

For a centerpiece, I used a red pick up nestled in some simple greens.

To echo the stripes on the border of the placemat, I used a small red and white striped plate that I found at Kroger. Then I placed a hunter green salad plate from Walmart on top of the red dinner plate from Ballard's. Now, that's diversity!

Then, just for giggles, I used a little car from the Dollar Store and tied a sprig of greenery on it to mimic the design element of the placemats.

In order to let the design on the placemat show, I slid the plate stack over to the left and balanced it out with the placement of the napkin. This gave me lots of room for the glassware.

This green handled flatware was from World Market and I placed it on top of a simple cream linen napkin with a bit of faggoting on it. Yes, I know I broke the "rules" about placement by putting it all on the same side, but taking liberty with your table is part of the creative process. Right? That's my story.......

These red vintage goblets gave the setting a bit of spunk. We just brought our pre-dinner wine glasses to the table with us as we were seated.

Old Imperial Glass salt and pepper shakers sit on the cream canvas runner.

These heavy wooden candlesticks and brown tapers echoed the wooden sides of the station wagon on the placemats.

I found this simple and refreshing and planned a menu that was also simple. I made a green salad with pine nuts and blue cheese crumbles for the first course, then we grilled lamb chops and paired them with cheese grits topped with roasted cherry tomatoes. A baguette from Whole Foods and a store-bought tiramisu finished things off. And lots of good wine! And laughter!

We have several more get togethers planned, so I'm not in any hurry to take down the Christmas tree this year. Usually that's my task as I watch the football games on New Year's Day. Fortunately, the tree this year has yet to drop even the first needle. It's as fresh as the day we put it up a month ago!

Finally! A Party on the Deck!

It was the most beautiful evening on Sunday! We had 14 dear friends over for a very casual pot luck dinner and it was finally cool enough to dine outdoors. It seems that the same people who will play 18 holes of golf in 95 degree weather find it too hot to eat a meal outside. Myself included. But Sunday the air was nearly cool and I actually took a stack of shawls and wraps outside just in case.

Since everything was simple and casual, I used these paper products now on sale at Target. Aren't they fabulous? My daughter in Ohio found them first, and that sent me on a search for them here in Atlanta. It wasn't so easy. First store had none, second store had only cups, then I finally found only what you see here. Fortunately, they were enough, and a plan was hatched.

Here, you see all three tables, with blue and white pots filled with sunflowers from the farmer's market, yellow napkins, and yellow or bamboo flatware.

You can see what a pretty night it was, and the lake was especially reflective and beautiful.

This is just a cardtable in the corner, but, because I kept it so simple, there was plenty of room for four.

The third table overlooked the pool and fireplace.

I placed several candles around the railing and we did end up lighting them, as we lingered over a beautiful fruit tart dessert.

I had some little blue and white votives as well.

Lots of different chairs, but that's what it took to all be together in one place.

I've had emails asking how our different outdoor areas link up, so here's the round deck that we were just on, with these steps leading from......

I served from the bar/cabana room just off of the pool.

Here are the dishes before anything is dished up, because, as you know, I loose my focus and forget about blogging as soon as the first guest arrives.

Behind the bar, I set out more Cheeky products (the "Happy Day" cups) and various pitchers for tea and water. Forget the fact that I still have the Press and Seal on the lemons!

I filled this English footbath with ice and wine bottles.

This wooden French crate holds the summer liqueurs.

We're ready for coffee, too!

This area of the same room has nothing to do with the evenings' offerings, but I just wanted to show off the monogrammed towels that my friend Amy (who can do anything) made for me. Aren't they awesome?

I like to extend the feeling of the evening into the powder rooms on the first floor. Here are some daisies that feel like the sunflowers.

And in the other powder room, I tried to do the same.

I almost forgot that I had these hand towels.

And my little French shepherdess got some black-eyed daisies in her brass baskets.

I had a sunflower wreath on the front door, but when I got the news that one of our couples had just become grandparents that morning, I changed it out to this little onesie and a welcome sign for the new little one, Cort.

This lucky baby was born to the beautiful couple I featured in a 3-part blog about their wedding exactly two years ago. You can see it here, here, and here. They are beautiful people inside and out, and I'm so happy to share their happiness.
